Issues at short range
The following is from only testing it for less than an hour. I still need to do more work with it so reader beware... According to the Robotshop's website, this LIDAR's range is from 0-40 meters. Reading that I bought the LIDAR to test for both short/long range usage. Per the operations manual, the accuracy below 5m is about +-2 cm and above 5m is +- 10cm. I tested the LIDAR against a flat, white wall at a 90 degree angle (the best scenario) hooked up to an Arduino with a 680uF cap across the power and ground. You can use either i2c or pwm and I chose i2c mode of communications. I am seeing pretty good values at distances at 8m and below at +-5 cm which is acceptable for my needs. I did not need to test beyond 8m. For very close ranges things break down. At 75 cm it is still accurate but below that values will fluctuate. Below 25 cm the values are completely untrustworthy. The spec does have a disclaimer that says "nonlinearity below 1m". I was not sure what that meant but suspected that meant below 1m your values will not be very good. That appears to be the case here. I still need to do more testing such as hitting the wall at an angle and beam spread at greater distances. This sensor looks very good for longer distances but short ranges < 1m it might not be for you. If I find anything of interest in the coming week I will post more.
