Tried and True Microcontroller Training

This kit is a great first step to learn about how to use microcontrollers. Well laid out guide - so it is great for self teaching or with the guidance of a mentor/teacher. There some things were the size and economy of Basic Stamp is more appropriate than Arduino - it pays to know all your options.
