The Pololu ACS724 Current Sensor Carrier 0A to 5A) is a sophisticated carrier of Allegro’s unidirectional 5A ACS724LLCTR-05AU Hall effect-based linear current sensor. This model is designed to accept a unidirectional current input up to 5A and outputs a proportional analog voltage (800 mV/A) that measures 500 mV when the input current is zero. The typical output error is ±0.9%. It operates within a voltage range of 4.5V to 5V and is specifically designed for use in 5V systems.

This current sensor serves as a carrier board or breakout board for Allegro’s ACS724LLCTR Hall effect-based linear current sensors. It is equipped with differential Hall sensing which rejects common-mode fields, ensuring that the orientation of the sensor relative to uniform external magnetic fields does not affect the measurement. The conductive path internal resistance is typically 1.2 mΩ, and the PCB is made with 2-oz copper, ensuring minimal power loss in the module. The IC is capable of electrically isolating the current path from the sensor’s electronics (up to 2.4 kV RMS), which allows the sensor to be inserted anywhere along the current path and to be used in applications that require electrical isolation. It boasts a high 120 kHz bandwidth for faster response times in control applications.

The carrier is equipped with the ACS724LLCTR-05AU, which operates at 5V and is designed for unidirectional input current from 0A to 5A. When Vcc is 5V, the output voltage is offset by 500 mV and increases by 800 mV per amp of input current. This board comes assembled with all surface mount components, and a 3x1 strip of 0.1 inch header pins is included but not soldered in.

The sensor requires five connections: the input current (IP+ and IP-), logic power (VCC and GND), and the sensor output (OUT). The sensor requires a supply voltage of 4.5 V to 5 V to be connected across the VCC and GND pads, and the sensor outputs an analog voltage that is linearly proportional to the input current. The FILTER pin allows for adjustment of the board’s bandwidth by adding a capacitor to ground in parallel with the 1 nF capacitor that is already on the board. Without an added external filter capacitor, the bandwidth is about 90 kHz.
