The Sherline Rigid Column Upgrade Short Base (") is specifically designed for users of the 5400-series mill, offering enhanced functionality and versatility. This upgrade includes the 2000-series ram, which features laser-engraved scales available in either SAE or metric measurements. The design incorporates the versatility of the 2000-series mill column, providing a large work area and enabling movement in seven directions.
The short column stands at 4 inches tall, matching the height of the regular 2000 mill round column. It is engineered to be mounted on the new mill base, which includes a thru hole for the Y-axis cover tube. This configuration allows for an additional ¼ inch of Y-axis travel compared to the 2000 column, enhancing the operational range of the mill.
The column is secured to the mill base using two angled side-by-side 1/4-20 SHCS bolts, and two new bolts are included with each base. The mounting hole pattern is designed to accommodate the Y-axis leadscrew cover tube, ensuring compatibility with the newer style base. For those using an older style mill base, modifications are necessary to accommodate the new hole pattern.
Note: This column is not compatible with older style mill bases without modification, which involves drilling and counterboring new holes.
